Mike Newport LA Visit
Composer member Mike Newport reports from his recent NZFC funded trip to Los Angeles.
Last month, with the help of a career development award from the NZFC, I attended the annual Billboard Film and TV Music Seminar – a two day event in Hollywood. It was full of fascinating discussions with film composers Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman, Steve Jablonsky and Marco Beltrami (and many others), as well as TV guys such as Bear McCreary and Trevor Morris.
In attendance were a wide mix of people from composers and songwriters, to music supervisors and publishers. For anyone working in the field of music for picture I couldn’t recommend it enough – it was a thrilling and very informative 2 days, and certainly very beneficial from a networking point of view.
Whilst in LA I also managed to have a tour of Han Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions, spent a few days working with ‘Dexter’ Composer Daniel Licht, attended the scoring session at Sony for ‘Muppets Most Wanted’ with the Hollywood Symphony and composer Christophe Beck, checked out Warner Bros Post including the Eastwood Scoring Stage and met with James Newton Howard at his Santa Monica studio. All in all, an amazing trip which was not only very inspiring but i’m certain will also lead to further opportunities down the track.
