Claire Cowan

Claire Cowan is a composer and multi-instrumentalist who works across a wide spectrum of genres. Classically trained, she graduated with an Honours degree in Composition from the University of Auckland in 2006, and has since pursued her passion for combining music with film, dance and theatre. Claire is an experienced orchestral arranger, having worked with all of New Zealand’s leading orchestras and pop icons such as Dave Dobbyn, Anika Moa, Julia Deans, Jon Toogood, Bic Runga and The Modern Maori quartet. Recent projects include a 6 part mini-series score “Hillary” for TVNZ, a telemovie ”KIWI” directed by Thomas Robins, and a Violin concerto for the soloist Amalia Hall based on the life of the queer icon and NZ dancer Freda Stark.

Her own performance project,The Blackbird Ensemble,(5-25 piece orchestra) have performed to sold out crowds in since it’s inception in 2010, covering rarely performed classical and popular music by living composers in new and imaginative ways. www.clairesmusic.com
